Gabriel Dávila is a Venezuelan guitarist who started his musical career at a very early age studying violin in the Emil Friedman School in Caracas, Venezuela and at age 15 decides to start playing guitar. In 2003 he goes to the United States and receives a scholarship to study guitar at the prestigious Interlochen Arts Academy. He continues his studies at Lawrence University where he graduates Magna Cum Laude as a guitar performance major. During his stay at Lawrence he is part of the Lawrence University Jazz Ensemble, recipient of the 2007 Downbeat Magazine's Outstanding Collegiate Big Band Performance. He also had the opportunity to work along great musicians such as Maria Schneider, Benny Golson, Wyclieff Gordon, Kenny Wheeler, Brandford Marsalis, among others.

 

In 2009 he returns to Venezuela and studies composition with Gerry Weil and joins the Simon Bolivar Jazz Big Band as lead guitarist. During his 5 year residency in Caracas, he joins the staff of Taller de Jazz Caracas as a senior music instructor and performs with his band as well as other renown musicians including Pablo Gil and Aquiles Baes. His debut album "UNO" comes in 2013 which combines a set of originals with a few jazz standards in a quartet and trio setting. This album leads to nominations for Pepsi Award  - Jazz Artist of the Year, as well as Pepsi Award - Jazz Album of the Year.

 

 

In 2014, after a brief stay in Medellin, Colombia where he got to perform with great musicians such as Jose Juvinao and Byron Sanchez, he attends the University of Oregon with a Graduate Teaching Fellowship to pursue a Master's of Music in Jazz Studies. At Oregon he joins the Downbeat award winner Oregon Jazz Ensemble as well as the Herb Merkel JazzArts Oregon Combo which lead to live albums with both bands. He is also part of Tony Glausi's Funk Nonet which records a studio album in 2016 due to be release in September.

 

Taller de Jazz 214 x 241He graduates Summa Cum Laude in June of 2016 and proceeds to finish is second album, "Familia". This album is dedicated to his family and it includes a set of originals in different ensemble configurations including a sextet, quintet, quartet, and trio.

 

He has been able to work with great musicians and bands such as Pablo Gil, Aquiles Baes, Victor Mendoza, Toni Glausi, Josh Hettwer, Matt Hettwer, Ken Mastrogiovanni, Lyle Hopkins, Nuevas Almas, Prisca Dávila, Marieva Dávila, Mark Brown Quartet, Antonio Mazzei, Panela Ensamble, Gonzalo Tepa, Roberto Koch, Francisco Vielma, Luca Vincenzetti, Juanma Trujillo, among others. He has 2 published set of arrangements with Hal Leonard Corporation (Jazz Guitar Chord Melody Solos: Latin Standards and Irving Berlin).

 

He currently resides in Barcelona, where he is teaching and playing in the local scene.
